Our second study day took place on 6th November 2015, and focused on direct composite restorations with the renowned Professor Brian Millar from King College London. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on composite restorative dentistry, and heads up their Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics programme.
This study day blended highly interactive lecture based theory teaching with hands on simulated training using materials kindly provided by Coltene/Whaledent. The AM session was introduced by Dr Kaushisk Paul, and consisted of a series of talks by Prof Millar on: the differences between cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry, digital smile design, effective and predictable shade matching, composite build ups, composite layering techniques, polishing composites. Delegates were tasked with practicing their composite build ups and layering techniques.
After lunch the PM session covered topics including: the use of staining techniques, posterior composite placement, componeers and their use, temporisation, management of bruxism, and occlusion. The hands on sessions allowed delegates to try their hands at fabricating anterior composites using and placing componeers, as well as practicing posterior composite placement, and fabrication of anterior flat bite planes.
This study day was intensive from the get go and provided delegates with an excellent opportunity to try their hands at range of different composite placement techniques, under the watchful eye of Prof Millar.
We would like to thank both Coltene for providing the materials, and Prof Brian Millar for providing his time and expertise in teaching our delegates here at the FGDP West Midlands.
